Christmas Greetings!
If the Thanksgiving holiday is any indication, it is likely we'll need to be more creative and put forth more effort to partake in the holiday spirit at Christmas-time this year.
Sometimes, when all other efforts fail, we are left with memories of bygone Christmases, and the warmth of past yuletide joy. If making new memories is beyond reach this year, feel free to revel in your own Christmas history. Or, if you find any inspiration from something in this newsletter, be my guest.
Sincerely,

Year-end Strategies to Maximize Your Health Insurance Dollars
|
You've Met Your Deductible
If you've already met your deductible for 2020, or are close to it, medical care rendered before the end of the year may be covered at a lower out-of-pocket cost. Conversely, if you expect to have a lot of health care expenses in 2021, you may want to schedule non-emergency medical care for early next year so you can fulfill your deductible as soon as possible.
You Have Unused Dental Benefits
In most cases, dental coverage works differently from regular health insurance. This benefit is often capped at $1,000 to $3,000 annually, according to the American Dental Association. If you have unused benefits remaining, now may be the time to schedule a last-minute appointment, especially if you might need serious dental work soon. That way, you can spread the cost over both years and pay less out of pocket for dental care.
You Have Leftover FSA Money
If you set up a flexible spending account, or FSA, through your employer as a supplemental benefit to your health insurance, you were able to contribute pre-tax dollars to it each year and use that money for qualifying health expenses. Now's the time to check your balance.
If you have funds left in your FSA, or you are over your rollover limit, it's time to spend the money. The good news is that a lot of expenses qualify, starting with purchases you've already made. If you can prove it, you can reimburse yourself for health costs you paid earlier in the year. Check to see if there are any out-of-pocket health care expenses you haven't submitted for reimbursement. It's easy to forget co-pays, prescription drug expenses, or certain medical supplies.
You Have an HSA
Whatever you do, don't confuse your Health Savings Account, or HSA, with an FSA and hurry to spend it. FSAs have 'use-it-or-lose-it' rules that apply each year, but HSAs do not. Any funds in your HSA are yours to keep indefinitely, even if you change jobs.
Some even look at HSAs as a retirement savings vehicle since the funds can be used to pay for Medicare premiums and medical costs in retirement. That's a big deal: Fidelity Investments estimates that the average couple retiring this year will face $220,000 in medical costs in retirement. You may even want to add funds to your HSA now. Maximize on your tax saving by funding the HSA fully before year's end.

“I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn’t have picked this little tree,” said Charlie Brown. “Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I don’t really know what Christmas is all about. Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”
“Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about,” said Linus. [Linus walks to center stage]
“Lights, please.”
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign to you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
[Linus picks up his blanket and shuffles off-stage]

One evening, after spending several days with his new wife, a man leaned over and whispered into her ear, “I love you.”
She smiled – and the man smiled back – and she said, “When I’m eighty years old and I’m thinking back on my entire life, I know I will remember this moment.”
A few minutes later, she drifted off to sleep. The man was left with the silence of the room and the soft sound of his wife’s breathing. He stayed awake, thinking about everything they had done together, from their first date to their first vacation together and ultimately to their big wedding. These were just some of the life choices that the couple had made together that had led to this very moment of silence in the presence of each other.
At one point, the man then realized that it didn’t matter what they had done or where they had gone. Nor did it matter where they were going.
The only thing that mattered was the serenity of that very moment. Just being together. Breathing together. And resting together.
The Moral:
We can’t let the clock, calendar, or pressure from external sources take over our lives and allow us to forget the fact that every moment of our lives is a gift and a miracle – no matter how small or seemingly insignificant it is. Being mindful in the special moments that you spend in the presence of the ones that you love are the moments that truly give your life meaning.
